What Should I Consider When Buying A Stroller?

I hate to break it to you, but there is no one perfect stroller for every family.

Depending on where you live, how you’re planning to use the stroller and what features are most important to you will all play a role in determining the best stroller for your baby.

Here are few factors you will definitely want to consider.

Size:

If your vehicle or storage area is small, size will be one of your greatest determining factors.

For extremely tight spaces, small umbrella strollers like this one are perfect for older babies. Keep in mind that jogging strollers and several luxury strollers are quite big and can take up an entire small car’s trunk space.

Intended Use:

Think, how are you planning to use your stroller?

Do you want to take it out with you hiking or on trails? If so, opt for an all-terrain stroller.

Are you mainly planning on using it to cruise through the suburbs and malls? A solid, traditional stroller will be best.

Will you have to take your stroller with you on public transportation? You’ll need a lightweight and portable umbrella stroller.

The type of use you have for your stroller will greatly impact the type of stroller you purchase.

Space For Sibling:

Do you have an older sibling who needs somewhere to sit or do you plan to have another baby soon after this one?

If so, you’ll want to look into getting a double stroller or a sit and stand stroller like this one.

Weight Restrictions:

It’s important to not only know the upper end of the weight restrictions for older children, but also the minimum requirements for babies. This is especially important when using a jogging stroller or on rugged terrain.

Car Seat Compatibility:

Do you want to use your infant car seat with your stroller? If so, make sure they are compatible by using a travel system like this one or using a skeleton stroller frame.

Ease Of Use:

You’ll definitely want to know how your potential stroller feels when you use it. If it all possible, test it out at a store to get a feel for it.

You will want to see how easy the stroller is to maneuver (try it one handed too!), if the handlebar is the right height for you and your husband and if you can easily fold it down by yourself.

Storage:

How important is storage for you?

If you’ll be using your stroller frequently and for long periods of time see how much space is available in the under seat space. Don’t forget you can usually use stroller straps to attach your diaper bag to the stroller’s handlebars.

Safety:

Of course, we all know safety is the utmost importance.

When you’re looking over your potential stroller, look for a 5 point harness – it’s the most secure type of harness available. Also, see what kind of brakes and locking mechanisms are used on the stroller.

Also, don’t forget to register your stroller after you purchase one, so you’ll be alerted if a recall has occurred.

In a hurry?

This specific stroller is the top rated one in 2018.

What Types Of Strollers Are Available?

1. Traditional Stroller:

Traditional strollers are the type we’re all used to. They come in a wide range of price, but they generally have the same features such as a cushioned, reclinable seat, a canopy, and a storage basket beneath the seat.

2. Umbrella Stroller:

Umbrella strollers are lightweight, easy to open and close and have curved handles like an umbrella.

3. All In One Travel Stroller System:

Stroller travel systems are one of the most popular options today because they’re everything you need to transport your baby in one set. Most often travel systems have an infant car seat, a compatible stroller base, and a toddler/child stroller seat. Some also come with infant car seat bases for your car.

4. Skeleton Stroller:

Skeleton strollers are those odd looking strollers that are solely composed of a stroller frame. With these strollers, you click your infant car seat into place and go.

5. Double Stroller:

A double stroller is simply a stroller with two seats, either side by side or one in front of another. They’re most often used for twins or for siblings close in age.

6. Jogging Stroller:

Jogging strollers or all-terrain strollers are usually three-wheeled strollers with added suspension, lockable front tire and heavier duty wheels.

Hey Katie! This post is all about finding a designer-looking stroller on a budget, so I found the ones that were closest in looks and a savings of at least $200. But, that's a great idea as well-maybe a post about the most affordable strollers all under $300? What do you think?

Hi Sam!

Thanks for this post! I'm a stroller geek and really enjoyed this post! I've heard good things about Stokke strollers, but as you mentioned, it is often times above budget for many of my readers. I really like UPPAbaby strollers though!

What stroller do you have?

Feel free to check out my website where I geek out about strollers at: http://www.mommystroller.com

Hey Evelyn, thanks for stopping by! Ohh, I haven't used an UPPAbaby, but they do look nice. We currently use a Mountain Buggy stroller and I'm pretty amazed at the durability and maneuverability of it.
