Sesame Street is a classic that we’re certain will not go away any time soon! It’s already been around for over 50 years!!

Moms love it because it’s educational and kids love it because the characters are just so silly and fun to watch.

We’ve combined our love of handprint art and crafts for kids with our favorite Sesame Street characters to make this cute handprint craft for kids.

We’re certain your little ones will love making this Cookie Monster and Elmo craft any time of year!

Supplies

• Colored card stock (in blue, red, orange and black)
• White card stock
• Scissors
• .5″ circle punch
• Glue stick (this one is our top pick)
• Cookie Monster & Elmo template

How To Make Handprint Elmo & Cookie Monster

Download the free template and print out on the cardstock. Cut out all the pieces.

Trace your child’s hand onto the red and blue paper. Cut them both out.

Trace Elmo’s nose onto the orange card stock and cut out. Trace Elmo’s mouth onto the black card stock and cut out. Use the .5″ circle punch or scissors to cut out 2 eyes from the black card stock.

Arrange the red handprint with the fingers pointing down. Assemble Elmo by gluing the white eyes from the template onto the top of the handprint.

Glue the 2 black circles onto the middle of the white eyes from the template.

Glue the orange nose onto the bottom of the eyes, with about 1/3 of the nose overlapping the eyes.

Secure the black smile beneath the nose with glue.

Trace Cookie Monster’s mouth onto the black card stock and cut out. Use the .5″ circle punch or scissors to cut out 2 eyes from the black card stock.

Assemble Cookie Monster’s eyes by gluing one black circle to the top left part of the white eye. Glue the other black circle to the bottom right part of the white eye. This will give Cookie his signature silly look.

Arrange the blue handprint with the fingers pointing down. Glue the completed eyes to the top of the handprint. Attach the smile with glue just beneath Cookie’s eyes.

You’re done!

Sesame Street Character Template

If you’d rather not freehand the designs for Cookie Monster and Elmo, we have a free printable template you can use. Inside the file, there are 2 different options for both characters.

This first template has all the components of each character on one page. This is best suited for 1-2 children. You’ll cut out the pieces from the template and then retrace them onto the coordinating colored card stock.

The second option is all of the same colored parts on one page. For example, one page has 12 different ovals for Elmo’s nose. You’ll print this directly onto the orange card stock. This way, the kids only have to cut out once and not retrace the template onto the right colored paper.

This option is best suited for larger amounts of kids like in a classroom, daycare or church setting.

Ways To Use This Handprint Craft

Because of the simplicity of this craft, we think it’s a fun activity for young kids of all ages!

We would suggest using this craft at home with your kids who love Sesame Street or for a simple craft for preschoolers learning about colors.

To tie this craft in with colors, you can talk to your kids about primary and secondary colors. Ask them questions like, “What color is Cookie Monster?” or “What color is Elmo’s nose?”.

For slightly older kids who have learned more about colors you can ask questions like, “What 2 colors mixed together create orange?” or “What color would you create if you mixed blue and red?”

This is a simple way to get kids thinking and hypothesizing!

Another fun way to use this craft is for a Sesame Street birthday party! This craft would be a simple way to keep the children occupied. Plus, it could double as a cheap party favor for the kids to bring home.
