Recently we’ve been making more than a few Dr. Seuss crafts for kids. Today, we’re sharing everyone’s favorite elephant, Horton!

This fun Horton Hears A Who printable puppet craft is a great activity to make during Read Across America week, on Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd, or any time the mood strikes you.

We love how sweet and determined poor old Horton is and knew he’d make the perfect paper bag puppet.

Brown paper bag puppets are a classic children’s craft idea and with good reason too!

They’re fun, simple and cheap to make. You probably already have everything you need to make it already in your craft closet.

And, paper bag puppets are fun to play with after you make them too! That’s a win-win for Mom or Teacher!

Supplies

• Brown Paper Bag
• Colored card stock (in blue or gray)
• White card stock
• Scissors
• Glue stick
• Horton craft template (click the “click here to get this freebie” image at the end to open the form)

Directions

Start by downloading the Horton template and printing it out. Once you have the template printed, gather the materials needed for this fun activity. Get those scissors ready, and let’s help the kids bring this Dr. Seuss craft to life!

Now help your kids measure the bottom portion of the bag. Once you’ve got the measurements, it’s time to cut out a rectangle from your chosen colored card stock that matches the size. This will be Horton’s body.

Show your kids how to spread glue evenly on the back of the card stock and then carefully place it at the bottom part of the paper bag.

Next, Find the piece you’ve prepared to represent Horton’s trunk. We’ll be placing this at the bottom portion of the top flap of the paper bag. Guide your kids in applying a bit of glue to the back of the trunk and then positioning it right on the flap.

Have your kids glue Horton’s face on top of his trunk, positioning it on the flap of the bag.

Next, have your kids locate Horton’s eyes and place them just below the eyelashes.

Finally, it’s time to ensure Horton can hear all those tiny voices from Whoville. Help your child position Horton’s ears on either side of the paper bag, attaching them on the backside so they peek out in that adorable elephant way.

Isn’t that a simple craft for kids to make? It’s the best way to remind them that ‘a person’s a person, no matter how small!’

You can use blue or gray paper or print the template onto white paper and have your kids color it in.
