We have tons of fun making handprint crafts because they’re simple, cheap and quick to make!

If your child is able to cut out the pieces themselves, there’s no prep work involved. If they’re not yet to that point, you’ll want to have the pieces cut out and ready to go before you sit down and craft.

Feel free to embellish your robin with some crafting feathers or anything else that your child wants!

Preschool Bird Unit Ideas

While crafts in and of themselves are fun and help teach necessary skills, we love the idea of adding them to an end of a study unit.

If you’re homeschooling your preschooler, this will work perfectly with a bird study unit.

Depending on how in-depth you want to get with them, choose a few of the following ideas.

Read a simple, introductory book on birds, like this one. This book talks about birds common to the United States. You can read about all the birds or just pick a section that’s about the bird you want to learn more about (like the robin!).

If you want a more simplified book for your child, we’d recommend this book instead. It has colorful pictures and simplified text making it engaging for kids. This would be a perfect option for toddlers as well!

After you read about birds in your area, why not let the kids do a hands-on activity like this bird sensory bin? It’s a fun outdoor activity children can play with.

Next, we suggest taking it outside in good ‘ol mother nature to go bird watching!

See how many birds your child can find and try to identify as many as possible. You may want to have children’s binoculars to make it more fun!

Depending on where you live, you might go to a short hiking trail, a local park or even a walk down your street.

Kids will be so excited once they find the birds they’ve been learning about!

After you’ve done all that, why not finish it off with this fun handprint bird craft?

However you plan to use this craft idea, we’re sure your children will have fun making their hands turn into these cute little robins!
