Tractor Popsicle Stick Craft For Kids

Inside: Make this fun tractor popsicle stick craft to go along with your farm themed units.

This week we’re talking all about farms!

We’ve just begun making a bunch of easy kids crafts.  So far we made this cute paper plate pig craft, used these simple farm animal coloring pages to banish boredom and played with this preschool farm theme small world play.

Today we’re making a tractor out of popsicle sticks, wooden clothespins and some colored card stock.

Tractor Popsicle Stick Craft For Kids

Supplies

• Popsicle sticks
• Wooden clothespins
• Glue (this one works best with popsicle sticks)
• Paint (in green and red)
• Paintbrush
• Scissors or circle punches (in 1″, 1.5″ and 2.5″)
• Colored card stock (in black, yellow and white)
• Tractor template

Directions

1. Download the tractor template and print on white card stock. Cut out all the pieces. Trace the exhaust pipe and the wheels on black card stock. Trace the inside of the wheels onto yellow card stock. 
2. Glue 7 popsicle sticks together by cutting a popsicle stick in half and gluing each half to each side of the 7 popsicle sticks (like in the picture).
3. Disassemble 3 clothespins and stack 5 of the halves together. Glue the 5 clothespins halves together by gluing a half popsicle stick on the back.
4. Let these dry completely before moving on.
5. Connect the bottom of the tractor (the 7 popsicle sticks) to the top of the tractor (the 5 clothespin halves) by gluing a popsicle stick to the back of both parts. Let dry.
6. Paint the tractor in a few thin coats of paint and let dry.
7. Punch or cut out the tractor wheels and inside of the wheels. Glue the smaller yellow circle inside each of the larger black circles to make the tires.
8. Glue the tires onto the bottom of the tractor, with the larger tire in the back.
9. Glue the exhaust pipe to the back of the tractor, in front of the clothespins.
10. Glue the windows to the front of the clothespins.

My boys loved playing with these little wooden tractors once they were all finished.

Because of all the gluing that needs to be done to create this craft, I’d tailor the amount the child does to the age of the child.

My 8 year old is able to glue the pieces together and wait for them to dry, while my 4 year old definitely isn’t. For younger kids, I’d have the tractor completely glued together and dry so they don’t have to wait as long to start the “decorating” part of the craft.

Another thing I want to mention is that the glue you use makes all the difference!

I would not try to use standard Elmer’s school glue because when we did, it just didn’t hold up very long.

Instead, we used this strong, non-toxic one made by Elmer’s.

All in all, this tractor craft was fun to make and goes along perfect when talking about transportation and vehicles or for farm unit studies!
