Plaid Woodland Party Theme: 1st Birthday

This rustic woodland party theme is a great kids birthday party idea that you’ll love!

If you know a little bit about me you may know that I love bold, bright colors.

But I also have another side that sometimes screams to be heard. It’s a side that loves rustic, warm and traditional style.

Especially during the winter. When my little baby turned one (where did the time go?!) I was completely unprepared.

I had no idea what kind of party to throw and to be completely honest, I wasn’t going to throw him a party at all!

I know, I know; that sounds a little sad.

My older son, had a huge 1st birthday. We had a professional smash cake for him, went all out for the decorations and had the entire family over. And I loved it, but this time around I thought, ehh, he won’t remember, right?

So there I was bound and determined to make it a quiet family affair when I had just a few days left until his big day. And then the mom guilt suddenly and quite violently set in.

What was I thinking?! How could I not throw him a party?! Throwing parties is one of the ways I express my love, so I realized I had really wanted to do it.

With the time ticking, I scrambled for an idea for his party theme when one day I was walking down Target’s party aisle. Suddenly a light came from the sky, angels sang and I found their amazing plaid party decorations. Ok so maybe that was a little extreme, but once I saw the decorations a lightbulb went off and I decided to create a rustic, plaid, woodland themed party.

I purchased the adorable plaid plates, the birthday banner, the black and white striped straws and the pinecone vase filler from Target and set off to design my cutie’s party!

I didn’t end up needing a lot of party printables since there were no children at the party (besides my other son) so I only created a matching welcome sign for the front door and food tent cards.

When I was creating the food tent cards I was trying to think of cute theme ideas, that were also allergy friendly (we’re gluten free, dairy free, and egg free) and found some things that would work for us. Here’s what we went with:

  • Forest Apple Cider: I was going to add mulling spices to apple juice but ended up forgetting to, so this was just plain juice
  • Moss Cakes: I made GF, EF, DF cupcakes (yes, you can make them allergy friendly!), frosted them, and dipped them in shredded coconut that was dyed green to make it look like moss.
  • S’mores Cakes: Another option for cupcakes are to make these s’more cupcakes, but they proved a little too difficult to adapt to all of our food allergies.
  • Chipmunk nibbles: This was simply popcorn in a bowl. Super easy and allergy friendly (P.S. If you have a Costco next to you, you have to try the Popcornopolis Nearly Naked Popcorn; it is AMAZING!).
  • Twigs: Another super simple one- just plain ole pretzel sticks (or GF pretzel sticks).
  • Woodland Berries: Any type of berry works here, but we are partial to strawberries, so that’s what we went with.
  • Dirt Cups: I made some homemade pudding and put them into disposable party cups.
  • Toadstools: I thought these were sooo cute! I found the idea for them on this blog.

All in all, I would say that I was very satisfied with the outcome of the party, especially considering the time constraint. We all had so much fun seeing him smash his cake and enjoy his special day!
