Supplies
- 1 batch of homemade play dough dyed in white, red and blue
- 1 thick art poster board
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Googly eyes (in medium and large)
- Glue dots
- Red pipe cleaners
- Wide popsicle sticks
- Markers (in rainbow colors)
Directions
- Make your play dough using our easy homemade play dough recipe or buy play dough in red and blue.
- Create a spork from the art board by tracing a large salad fork onto the board. Cut out the shape with scissors.
- Shape a medium piece of the white playdough into a ball. Push the playdough ball into the bottom handle of the spork.
- Make one of Forky’s arms by wrapping one red pipe cleaner around the spork and twisting in the middle. Repeat for the other side.
- Place a glue dot behind the large googly eye and the medium googly eye and secure onto the foam spork head.
-
Pull apart a small amount of the red playdough and roll into a pencil thin shape. Place at the top of Forky’s head for his eyebrow.
-
Pull apart a small amount of the blue playdough and roll into a pencil thin shape. Shape this piece into a mouth and place on Forky below the googly eyes.
-
Take a wide popsicle stick and cut in half. At the bottom of one of the halves, draw a small rainbow with magic markers using red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
- Stick the half popsicle sticks into the bottom of the white play dough for Forky’s feet.
That’s all you need to do to create your own Forky made out of play dough!
Supply Substitutions
If you don’t have access to an art board, you could also use an actual spork instead. Since we’re using an 8.5″x11″ sheet of board to create this Forky, using a spork will mean your Forky will be significantly smaller and it may be more difficult for your child to create his eyebrows and mouth.
If you don’t have store bought play dough, then don’t forget it’s easy to make play dough at home and uses common pantry items you likely already have.
Sensory Play Benefits
This Forky sensory play is not only fun, but it also has tons of benefits for kids!
First off, if you’re wondering what sensory play is, let us define it for you. Sensory play is anything that engages a child’s sense of sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing or encourages them to use their body. So, yes, there are tons of ways to experience sensory play!
With this play dough sensory play, children will work on fine motor skills and build hand strength while they roll, shape and move the dough to form Forky’s face.
Sensory play also helps kids learn to problem solve and reevaluate what they’re doing. For instance, let’s imagine your child makes Forky’s eyebrows but they’re too big to fit on his face. When your child goes to put it on the spork he’ll realize it doesn’t look quite right.
He’ll then have to think about what he can do to fix it. Will he start over? Will he try to shape what he already has to make it smaller? There are so many options and opportunities to let your child problem solve with this activity.
This play dough sensory play can also help your child with language development. Playing with the play dough, foam board, googly eyes and other building materials exposes children to new descriptive words.
You can ask your child how he would describe the play dough. Does it feel the same or different from the pipe cleaners? You can help your child name the different textures with words like squishy, soft, fuzzy, hard, rough, soft and more!
