At the age of 8 a gift from my grandpa almost ruined my life.
I was the only girl in a family with four boys. You’d think I would have loved the unique position of being the only girl- and it did come with great perks (like not having to share a bedroom), but when I was young all I could see were the pitfalls.
One time in particular still haunts me. My grandpa came over for a holiday and brought myself and my older brother a present. I watched as my brother excitedly began to destroy his gift wrap. He opened the box and found the item I had been dreaming about for years, or you know, at least 5-10 minutes: a rock tumbler!
How could you get a better gift than that?! A machine that takes ugly, everyday rocks and makes them into smooth, polished pieces of stone. It was like having the goose who laid the golden egg!
I couldn’t wait to see what my mysterious package contained. I began to gingerly pull the edges of the tape from the box. With all four sides free I pulled off the lid and stared into what was unmistakably the gift no kid ever wanted to receive. Clothes.
It was the biggest letdown of my childhood. I’m pretty sure it was written all over my face. I tried to hold back the tears and convince my grandpa that I was appreciative of his gift. But I couldn’t get the image of that shiny, new rock tumbler out of my mind.
Naturally I hated being a girl.
So while I originally made this Batman nursery with a boy in mind I’m reminded of that distraught little girl. The one that just wanted to have all the “cool boy stuff” instead of the traditional girly things. I say go ahead and break the mold. If you love Batman, make your daughter a Batman themed room. If your husband loves Batman, make your daughter a Batman themed room. If your brother’s son’s friend loves Batman, make your daughter a Batman themed room.
Anyway you look at it, this is one hip little baby’s room.
