Independent playtime is something we’ve been working on for a while at my house.

My 3-year-old used to always want me to play toys with him and it’s something I really don’t like doing.

Give me a coloring page, a game, a craft, slime, whatever and I’m in.

But toys? No way. Playing with toys is so boring to me; I just can’t seem to get into it.

So over the last half of the year, I’ve been trying to encourage him to play independently.

One of the best ways I’ve found he likes to play by himself is with matching games.

He doesn’t like taking turns anyway, so when he plays alone he’s able to have everything to himself!

It’s a win-win for me because he’s not constantly asking me to play and he’s working on a variety of skills like:

  • visual memory
  • concentration
  • visual discrimination
  • vocabulary

and much more!
