When I was a child, I was certain I was the most clever kid around. I was a master at getting my way.
Case in point: grocery shopping.
I loved taking grocery shopping trips to the store with my grandparents. Not because we’d buy junk food or I wanted to get out of the house, but because of a very specific section of the grocery store.
The toy aisle.
It was a chance to have good ‘ole grandma and grandpa buy me something that I desperately needed. Something that would make my 9-year-old life complete. I didn’t care what it was; I just had to have something.
When I got the toy, life was sunshine and rainbows. Until it broke, about 3 minutes after we got home. Then my life as I knew it was over and I had to hatch a new plot to get the grandparents to take me back to the store.
Pretty ridiculous, huh?
Now, as an adult and mom, I see how insane it is to waste money on gifts for kids that are cheap, generic and bound to break in no time at all.
