How To Decorate A Gender Neutral Nursery

1. Choose a color palette.

There are so many themes and color palettes that are suitable for a gender neutral nursery. One of the most common color choices for either gender I’ve seen in recent years is gray. It’s soft, can be warm or cool and pairs well with so many other colors. Of course beige, cream and brown are still classic standbys as well. If you love color you can use modern shades of green, teal, aqua or orange. Another fabulous gender neutral option is a Scandinavian style black and white room. Finally, you can’t go wrong with a multicolored nursery. Check out my Pinterest Board, “Gender Neutral Nursery” for a ton of color palette ideas.

2. Find your focal piece.

Once you’ve narrowed down you color palette it’s time to determine your focal piece for the nursery. The crib is a common focal piece since it is holding your little bundle of joy, but don’t limit yourself to it. A large piece of artwork, a colorful dresser, or a stunning ceiling can all draw your eye.

3. Purchase a crib.

Of course, a crib is a necessity (even if you plan to cosleep for a while). White, black, and wood stained cribs are all options that are gender neutral. If you can’t get enough color, opt for a crib in yellow, green or orange. Wondering which crib to purchase? Then check out this post that has a crib for any budget!

4. Find the perfect chair.

A comfortable, stylish chair for the nursery is an absolute necessity to keep you sane while nursing or bottle feeding your baby. And don’t think that you are limited to nursery furniture! Any comfy chair will work. In my opinion it’s best to opt for a chair that is neutral in color (think grays, whites, blacks, browns) so it can let the rest of the room shine. And if you choose a style that is cohesive with the rest of your home, you may be able to use it as a chair in your living room after you and your kiddo no longer need it.

5. Don’t forget about storage.

In the beginning, storage seems a little unnecessary but as your baby grows (and so does their stuff) the storage will become even more important. Find pieces that blend into the room and have safety features for small hands.

6. Hang curtains.

Curtains help the whole room look polished and finished. Choose curtains that block light for those oh so necessary daytime naps or purchase a black out shade to go underneath the curtains.

7. Use small decorative accents to tie it all together.

Pillows, lamps, mirrors, and art are all perfect ways to showcase your personality. These pieces can either fit into your gender neutral color palette or you can wait until after the baby is born to select a few key pieces and make those items masculine or feminine to suit your needs. Then, if you repurpose the room for a future child, you can easily swap out those pieces for new ones.
