Easy Arctic Animal Activity

This shape learning activity is designed for children in preschool through kindergarten who are beginning to recognize and name shapes. The project turns simple geometric shapes into an adorable walrus to help kids see how they work together to make art!

Supplies

  • Colored cardstock or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Walrus Template (click the “click here to get your freebies” image at the end of the post)

Directions

Start by printing the template. Once the template is printed, gather the materials for this fun activity. Get those scissors ready, and let’s help the kids bring this walrus to life!

Look for the eyes and glue them onto the head, just below both eyebrows.

Find the two mouth area pieces and overlap them slightly in the center. Add glue to secure them together, creating the walrus snout.

Grab the nose piece and glue it right to the middle and top of the mouth area.

Now, find the two tusks and glue them behind the mouth area so the points hang down.

Add glue to the back of the finished mouth area and place it on the lower half of the head, just under the eyes.

Take the body piece and lay it flat on your table. Add glue to the bottom of the head and press it onto the top of the body. Look at that, your walrus is really starting to come to life now!

Glue the legs to each side of the body.

Now, find the flippers and glue one at the bottom of each leg. You’re done!

Walrus Shape Craft

This walrus shape craft invites children to explore these fascinating animals while making a cute arctic animal using familiar shapes.

Materials

  • Colored cardstock or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Walrus Template

Instructions

  • Print the template and cut out the pieces you need.
  • Begin by gluing the eyes onto the head, just below the eyebrows.
  • Next, glue the mouth area pieces together, overlapping them slightly in the center to form one snout.
  • Glue the nose onto the top and center of the mouth area.
  • Now, glue the tusks behind the mouth area.
  • Glue the finished mouth and tusks onto the lower portion of the head.
  • Continue to make the walrus by gluing the head onto the top of the body piece.
  • Now, glue the legs onto each side of the body.
  • Finish by gluing the flippers horizontally onto the bottom of the legs.
