Engaging Literacy Activity for Name Recognition
This chicken name craft turns a few simple supplies into a cute farmyard scene. Kids will love to see their name appear across the eggs, and it’s a great way to help them practice letter recognition when also learning about farm animals!
Little hands will strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they complete each step. Spelling their name also builds early literacy skills, including letter recognition and sequencing.
Kids begin to understand that letters appear in a specific order to form words, and they become more familiar with the shapes and sounds connected to the letters in their name. This also strengthens name recognition, which is often one of the first words kids learn to read and write.
You can personalize the project by typing your children’s names into our editable PDF template before printing. After that, they will follow the instructions below to assemble their cute little hen!

Directions
Start by printing the template, then gather the materials for this fun activity. Get those scissors ready, and let’s help the kids bring this chicken to life!

Take the chicken body and glue the eye pieces just below the eyebrows, lining them up so they fit right inside the lashes.

Glue the beak just below the eyes, centered in the middle.

Use a marker and let your child color in the tongue. It’s a simple detail, but it adds so much personality to your chicken.

Glue the red comb piece to the top of the chicken’s head and press it down.

Let’s give your chicken some texture. Use a marker to draw small curved lines on the body to create feather details. This is a fun step where kids can really get creative.

Take the letter eggs and encourage your child to spell their name across the chicken’s chest. Say each letter out loud together as you place them to help build name recognition. Once everything looks right, glue each egg in place.

Grab the nest piece and glue it along the bottom of the chicken so it sits right in front of the eggs. This makes it look like your chicken is sitting cozy in its nest.

Let’s make the nest look extra cute! Use a marker to draw little lines and squiggles on the nest for texture.

This name activity is a fun and hands on way to build early literacy skills while getting creative. As kids glue each piece and spell out their name, they’re practicing letter recognition, fine motor skills, and confidence in a way that feels like play.
