Supplies
- Apple
- Acrylic paint (in orange and green)
- White card stock
- Construction paper or colored card stock
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Knife
- Paint brush
- Black marker
Directions
Adults only: Cut an apple in half and set it aside.
Pour the orange paint into a bowl. Paint the sliced apple with a thick coating of orange paint and press firmly onto the white card stock.
Carefully pull the apple back up, being careful not to push the paint to either side as you pick it up.
Repeat for as many jack o’lanterns as you want to make. Let dry completely.
Use the brown marker to draw the stems on the pumpkins.
Now it’s time to make the pumpkin faces. You can either download, cut, and glue the template faces on or use a black marker to draw on different jack o’lantern faces.
Glue the entire sheet of white card stock onto a piece of construction paper.
That’s all there is to it!
We had so much fun making this silly jack o’lantern art project. It’s such a simple Halloween craft for young children.
Pumpkin Craft For Preschool Benefits
Did you realize that this pumpkin craft is not only fun but also educational too?
Like every art or craft project, this simple activity allows children to work on necessary developmental skills while having fun!
One of the most valuable classroom skills preschool children can develop are fine motor skills.
Fine motor skills involve using the small muscles of the hands, fingers, and wrist.
When children develop these muscles, they’re able to do things like write, button and unbutton and use zippers.
This pumpkin craft allows them to refine those skills in a few ways. First, they’ll have to hold on to the apple firmly to not only press it onto the paper but also to pull it off without smearing it.
Secondly, using the paintbrush to paint on small pumpkin stems will take focus and concentration to paint it exactly where they want it to be.
Finally, if your child’s fine motor skills are advanced, they’ll be able to cut out the jack o’lantern facial expressions as well.
All of these tasks require different levels of fine motor skill mastery and help set your child up for success in the classroom and life!
Pumpkin Art Adaptations & Notes
If you want to make this craft at home with your child, but don’t have all the supplies on hand we have a few suggestions for you.
First, while the apple makes a perfect pumpkin shape, if you don’t have any or are against using food in the art-making process you can skip this step.
Instead, we’ve included an apple-shaped template in the free download. Print this out, trace it several times on the white paper and let your child paint inside the lines to make their pumpkin.
Since you’re drawing on the jack o’lantern faces, you’ll need to be sure your paint is completely dry so the marker can draw on top of the paint.
Lastly, you can also swap out the painted green stem for a green marker if you don’t want to have paint on hand.
