Sombrero Name Craft Idea
It’s a hands-on activity that lets kids personalize their sombrero while practicing important early learning skills like letter recognition, spelling their names, and fine motor control.
To make it even easier, grab our free editable template. You can type in each child’s name before printing or leave the circles blank so they can write the letters themselves.
Either way, it’s a fun and flexible way to tailor the project to your group.
Supplies
- Colored cardstock or construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Marker
- Sombrero Template (click the “click here to get your freebies” image at the end of the post)

Directions
Start by downloading and printing the sombrero template, then cut out all the pieces together. This is a great chance to practice those scissor skills!

Begin by gluing the purple decorative piece right on top. This goes along the curved edge of the hat’s crown to give it that festive pop.

Next, glue on the stripes across the sombrero. These will layer across the top portion of the hat.

Now it’s time to spell out the child’s name! Take the pom pom letters and have your child place them on the lower part of the hat.

Grab a black marker and draw vertical lines coming down from the brim—one for each letter in your child’s name. This makes it look like the letters are hanging from the sombrero like festive pom-poms.

Now that the lines are drawn, it’s time to glue each letter circle right where it belongs! Match each circle to the lines on the brim and press them down individually.
