The Cat In The Hat Art Project
It’s a wonderfully wacky way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday or add an artistic twist to story time as book companion activity.
Download our free template and let the painting fun begin! As little artists paint with their forks, they’ll create a fuzzy, textured effect that mimics the Cat’s fur.
Supplies
- Paper plate
- Paint
- Fork
- Black marker
- Colored cardstock or construction paper
- Glue stick
- Scissors

Directions
Start by downloading and printing the template. Once the template is printed, gather the materials for this fun activity. Get those scissors ready, and let’s help the kids bring this Cat in the Hat to life!

First, encourage your child to grab the disposable fork and paint. Squeeze the paint onto a paper plate, then dip the fork in the paint and paint the face onto the background paper. The outside of the face should be black and the inside of the face should be white. Let dry completely before moving on.

Take the hat stripes and glue them, evenly spaced, onto the white hat.

Trim any excess paper that hangs off the sides, then glue the completed hat to the top of the head.

Glue the eyes in the middle of the face.

Next, help your child to draw the eyebrows above the eyes.

Draw the nose and mouth below the eyes.


Finally, guide your child to glue the red bowtie at the bottom of the face.

Cat in the Hat Fork Painting Craft
Materials
- Paper plate
- Paint
- Fork
- Black marker
- Colored cardstock or construction paper
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Cat in the hat template
Instructions
- Download the Cat in the Hat template, print it, and cut out the pieces.
- Take a disposable fork and dip it into the white paint. Paint all around the inside of the face, leaving the outside border unpainted. Now, take the black paint and use the fork to paint the outside edge in black. Let dry.
- Glue the hat stripes to the the hat. Cut off any excess paper that hangs off the sides.
- Take the completed hat and glue it to the top of the cat's head.
- Glue the eyes in the middle of the face.
- Next, draw the eyebrows above the eyes.
- Draw the nose and mouth below the eyes.
- Finish off by gluing the red bowtie to the neck.
