This spring art activity encourages kids to explore colors, symmetry, and design choices. It supports fine motor development and hand-eye coordination as they put each piece together. Lessons about insects, life cycles, or springtime nature studies pair naturally with this fun insect craft.

Directions
Start by printing the template, then gather the materials for this fun activity. Get those scissors ready, and let’s help the kids bring this dragonfly to life!

Look for the eye pieces and glue them onto the head, placing them above the smile.

Take the thorax, which is the middle body piece. Glue the dragonfly’s head onto the top edge of the thorax.

Next, grab the abdomen piece. Glue it under the thorax to complete the body. Talk about how a dragonfly’s body has three main parts, just like the pieces in your template.

Trace your child’s hands on colored paper and cut them out to make the handprint wings. Add glue to the back, then place them behind the body so the wings spread wide on both sides.

Next, pick up the pipe cleaner antennae. Help your child gently curl the ends into fun spirals. This is a wonderful fine motor moment, and kids love making the swirls.

Add a little tape and attach the antennae to the back and top of the head. Talk about how insects use their antennae to feel and explore the world around them.

And just like that, your dragonfly is complete. Gently lift it and hold it by the wings to admire your child’s hard work!

This insect DIY is a fun way for kids to build fine motor skills while creating something bright and cheerful. Did your child have fun creating their dragonfly? Take a look at our spring crafts for kids for even more bright and playful activities to enjoy together.
